Bald and beautiful The marabou stork has no feathers on its neck and head which allows it to stay clean when eating messy foods.
Marabou storks, as with most bird species, mate for life, which is adorable; but the methods these birds use to attract their mates are anything but adorable. By clapping the beak together rapidly they can show that they are feeling threatened. It breeds in Africa south of the Sahara, occurring in both wet and arid habitats, often near human habitation, especially landfill sites. It has a long, reddish pouch hanging from its neck, which is used in courtship rituals. At the base of the nape there is another air sac which is reddish in color. During social displays they make a load croaking using their gular sack.
The Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos crumeniferus ), or simply marabou, is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. In both cases, a feathered head would become rapidly clotted with blood and other substances when the bird's head was inside a large corpse, and the bare head is easier to keep clean. It has a long, reddish pouch hanging from its neck, which is used in courtship rituals. The marabou stork’s orange-red head has black spots that are concentrated towards the forehead and base of the bill, as well as their inflatable throat sac.
THE pouch of the marabou stork (Leptoptilos crumeniferus (Lesson), was described by Peters 1 and its nature investigated by Chapin 2. It inflates during mating and allows the stork to call out for love.
It stands on long, grey legs, its upper body and wings are dark grey to black, and its underparts are white. The Marabou Stork is a frequent scavenger, and the naked head and neck are adaptations to this, as it is with the vultures with which the stork often feeds.
